Clothing Storage
Rationale
I chose to design a bathroom storage system that would be suitable for children aged between 5 -15 years. My final design provides a more interactive experience for my target audience by creating a product that functions as well as encouraging children to use it.
I was inspired to create a clothing storage system that mimics a pelican in the way that the pelican’s beak stretches out as it temporarily stores food and water. I incorporated this by making a stretchable storage bag that will expand as clothes are added. I also drew inspiration from a Venus flytrap which ensnares its prey by shutting close on it. I made the lid of the storage shut automatically as it ‘traps’ the clothes, this was included in the final design to create a level of interactivity for children. The colours chosen were used to be suitable for a bathroom environment as well as be bright and ‘fun’ for the target audience. The height of the storage is suitable for kids aged between 5 and up to 15 years of age. It is also suitable for adults who may need to use it without having to bend their backs. The final product uses minimal sharp edges and is simple and easy to use to ensure kids can easily use the product and be safe.
The materials used for a final product would include spandex for the bag since it is easily stretched and can return to its original shape after being manipulated. The main frame would be made from ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) since it is a lot more durable than regular plastics, is recyclable, and is ideal to provide a strong frame to hold the weight of the clothes. I wanted to make sure my design could be used in high density houses and had to make sure clothes from the storage could easily be taken to a washing machine. I used a detachable bag that is held on by Velcro, this allows the user to easily take off the bag and empty out the clothes. The design is ideal when placed against a wall since it only extends out by 150mm, which is again ideal for higher density living.

I like the expandable feature of your clothing storage as this would cater to a wide range of households. The bag is very much reflective of the pelican!
ReplyDeleteAs an improvement, I might suggest adding some kind of safety mechanism to prevent a child's hand getting injured with the auto-closing lid.

i like the color scheme in your design, it works well and makes the user think clean and tidy.
ReplyDeleteMy only concern with the design is the quantity of clothes that it can hold, and how much can be jammed in? it looks quite long and thin.

Your design concept for storing clothes is really appealing as this would fit nicely in a medium to high density housing. It very much mimics the structure of a pelican.
ReplyDeleteFor improvements, I suggest to make the hole bigger. it looks like it would be difficult for the user to fit bigger clothes (i.e jeans) overall, its a nice concept.
Like the above your design concept and colors work really well together and still makes the pelican influence very obvious however I personally think if the spring for the lid was removed it would be a much safer and convenient.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I like the use of colour, reminds me of the ocean. Good use of biomimicry. As above, maybe you could have a larger hole or different sizes to sort different clothing. Looks like a well made product. well done.
