Upcycled Utility
Rationale
I chose to design a lamp shade that would be successful in creating some unique and interesting shadows, whether the light was switched on or not. My final design uses flat sheets of the upcycled material, which have been folded and cut in a creative way to create elegant shapes. These shapes have been layered up with a repetitive pattern that not only reduces off cuts, but provides a unique design that has an impact when it is hanging from the ceiling and is easy to pull together.
I was inspired to create a lamp that had simple shapes while assembled and even when it was disassembled. I was very interested in creating shapes that would produce some interesting shadows. I did this by folding pieces of the poster in an almost half-cylindrical shape with cut outs that allow light to shine through certain areas.
I explored different ideas at first, considering whether to create a table lamp, hanging or wall lamp. In the end i chose to design a hanging/ pendant lamp shade. I chose this since i feel it would create a larger impact in a room seeing as it would be hanging down from the centre of the ceiling, compared to just sitting on a table.
A benefit from an environmental perspective is that four of my designs can be cut from a single JCDecaux poster with only 6.253% wastage through off cuts. The final design is also relatively easy to assemble due to its repetitive form. The lamp is also completely flat-packable, each sheet unfolds into a flat sheet of paper, and this was one of the major aspects of the assignment that I focused on throughout the whole design process.
I feel as though i have successfully upcycled the poster into something of greater value in a creative way that shows a level of material manipulation that appreciates the material, rather than attempting to work against it.

The combination of smaller and larger shapes thoroughly collaborate well to bring out the structure of the lamp. This design is also interesting as it lets out a good amount of light to form a interesting shadow shapes. This design can be further improved by being more efficient during assembly time. Using less fasteners would help get the job done. Overall, it is a incredibly unique design.
ReplyDeleteThe folding curved shapes really bring out the try shape of your design. I love the way the light interacts with each piece differently. You could explore other way of assembly or connections for example exploring the properties of the material.

ReplyDeletesunny, great lamp! i like your lamp! its gives off a nice light and the form is tree-like and natural. the only improvement i would make is to simplify the assembly because it seems to have alot of fasteners.
ReplyDeleteyour lamp is very nicley designed and really has a natural and organic look to it. it looks a lot like a tree which is very nice and suits a pendant lamp. maybe to improve you could explore different forms or maybe make each part smaller and add more.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully designed lamp. Its unique shapes gives an elegant aesthetic look. For me it mimics a leaf or tree constellations which gives a very relax mpod once its lit. For improvement more layerings and bigger size.
