Experience Enrichment

Rationale

I chose to redesign a kitchen vegetable knife. My final design promotes a more pleasurable experience for the user compared to other vegetable knives in the market. The smooth green handle on the knife was shaped and designed so that it would evoke the user in a way that would make them want to pick up the knife and use it. I considered a range of factors including hand anthropometry, ergonomics and ways to integrate the blade and the handle to produce a knife that is comfortable in the hand and one that would trigger a more pleasurable feeling.

The two main materials used for the appearance model was Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) for the handle and 1.5 mm thick stainless steel for the knife blade. MDF was used since it is easy to work with and stainless steel was used since it is a standard metal used in most kitchen knives. I decided on the colour green for the handle due to its obvious connection with vegetables. This also gives a slight indication for new users that the knife is made for vegetables.

Some of the benefits the knife offers is that it has a solid handle which sits firmly in the user’s hand allowing more control over each cut. There is also an indent on the top where the thumb can sit for extra stability. The slightly curved blade ensures the knife is also practical for finer cutting and chopping. Another major benefit is that the design is visually appealing and there is consistency within the design which counts towards a successful product.

My redesign on a vegetable knife turned out quite well and it promotes a positive experience with users through its aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. The design fits comfortably in the hand and is pleasurable to look at. The rubber grip was designed in a way to make it obvious how the knife should be held and where the thumb should sit. Overall the design elements show consistency in aesthetics and form to create a pleasing experience for the user.

  1. This is a very interesting design and I like how you've improved the comfortability of the handle by shaping it to fit the palm of the user's hand. An area of improvement that could be made would to perhaps extend a bit of the handle to the area near the end of the blade so the user's index finger isn't uncomfortable.

  2. Very interesting design, in that its very different from conventional kitchen knives. The handle looks comfortable, as well as the color making it more aesthetically pleasing. One improvement may be redesigning the shape of the blade, moving away from ordinary looking knives.

  3. I love how aesthetically pleasing this design is! It looks really comfortable to hold and the colour is quite a bold choice. An improvement could be to maybe include a guard at the back of the knife to protect the hand from slipping into it.

  4. This has pleasure written all over it. From the ergonomic looking handle to sleek and simple design, overall it is a fascinating design for a vegetable knife but there is always room for improvement. Redesigning the blade in a way that it integrates well with the handle should do the trick.

  5. Very nice design for a vegetable knife. Its contemporary shape and design meets the user's demand in terms of aesthetics. It also presents good ergonomic handle. Maybe the handle can be lengthen for better hand clearance away from the blade. Overall a very inviting and contemporary design that offers good design elements.

  6. After looking at your model and actually holding it, i found it very comfortable and solid. I could definitely imagine myself using it for a long period of time without having any strain or discomfort. I also really like the simplicity of the shape and the overall form.

  7. Your model is very solid and easy to hold. My only concern is when youre cutting your hand will tend to hit the table or where ever you are cutting which may cause some discomfort. Overall a very interesting design which is pleasing to the eye.

  8. I like the simplicity of this product and also of the fact the green colour has been used to show that this knife is for cutting vegetables. However I do think that the handle of the knife can be improved and make it longer. The user could accidentally cut his or her fingers as the back of the sharp blade might be the culprit for it.

  9. your design seems to make cutting more pleasureable and comfortable. its very eye-catching and really stands out from other knives. but, i really think you shouldve considered design the blade into a form that compliments the handle.

  10. Very nice vegetable knife. I really like colour of the product. It is not only aesthetically pleasing but fit to the product well. The addition of organic shape of the grip even maximise the aesthetically pleasing look. I think that the blade can be improved for safety issue because it did look like quite a huge blade at first. I think making it smaller or etc can improve it.

  12. To improve: it would be nicer if there was more contoured areas along the sides of the handle for a bit more grip. maybe even changing the surface of the handle to a rubber-coated alternative would suit
